deleuze and guatarri develop the concept of smooth space in ‚a thousand plateaus‘. the sea as smooth space par excellence
is first of all not striated. there is no grid, no fixed points, no prescribed paths. before the ‚striation‘ by determining the longitudes and latitudes, navigation was done by reading currents, winds, scents or the migratory lines of birds. the smooth space is characterized rather by haptic perceptions than by optical ones.
the work is based on the idea of floating in a round boat on the sea. the boat itself has no direction and the sea can‘t give you one either. the only way to give direction to moving forward is to shift your body to one side. this makes the boat tilt and the water lines change from a circle to a directional curve.

deleuze und guatarri entwickeln in ‚tausend plateaus‘ das konzept des glatten raumes. das meer als glatter raum par excellence ist erst einmal nicht eingekerbt. es gibt kein raster, keine festen punkte, keine vorgeschriebene pfade. vor der ‚einkerbung‘ durch die bestimmung der längen und breitengrade erfolgte die navigation durch lesen von strömungen, winden, düften oder der zuglininen der vögel. der glatte raum ist eher durch haptische wahrnehmungen geprägt als durch optische.
die arbeit baut auf der vorstellung auf, in einem runden boot, auf dem meer zu fahren. das boot ansich hat keine richtung und auch das meer kann einem keine vorgeben. die einzige möglichkeit, dem vorwärtskommen eine richtung zu verleihen, ist das verlagern des eigenen körpers zu einer seite. dadurch neigt sich das boot und die wasserlinien verändert sich weg von einem kreis hin zu einer gerichteten kurve.
